Razor Blade Cold
90cm x 90cm x 4cm (35.5" x 35.5" x 1.5") Acrylic on canvas 2021
This painting is a visual response to Leonard Cohen's iconic track, So Long, Marianne. The depth and raw emotion in Cohen's words resonate profoundly, carried by the dark, haunting tones of his voice and the weight of his lyrics.
One verse in particular became the anchor for the piece, inspiring its title:
"Now I need your hidden love
I'm cold as a new razor blade
You left when I told you I was curious
I never said that I was brave."
Listening to the track on repeat, I allowed the music and words to guide my movement. Each stroke became a reflection of Cohen’s melancholic longing and quiet vulnerability, capturing the tension between fragility and strength. The result is a painting that seeks to translate sound and poetry into a visceral, visual experience—an exploration of loss, courage, and the complexity of human connection.
